THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT (GDP) IN TERMS OF FMPLOYMENT GENERATION AND CAPITAL FORMATION

The construction industry is a very vital sector of the economy in every country as its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) in terms of employment generation and capital formation cannot be over emphasized.
It can be deduced from the above statement that project management in the construction industry cannot be neglected as the project manager plays an important role in the successful execution of construction projects. Project management has been described as the planning, controlling and co-ordination of a project from inception to completion on behalf of a client CIOB, (1992).

Project management concerns itself with the identification of client’s objectives in terms of utility function, quality, time, cost and the establishment of relationship between resources. Project management may also be defined as the overall planning, control and co-ordination of a project from inception to completion aimed at meeting a client’s requirements in order that the project will be completed on time, within authorized cost and to the required quality standard CIOB, (1992). The project manager will ensure that the client’s brief, all designs, specifications and relevant information/data are made available to and are executed as specified with due regard to cost, by the design team, consultants and contractors (i.e. the project team), so that the client’s objectives are fully met CIOB, (1992).

BUILDING is the profession in Nigeria responsible for procurement management for the total achievement of client’s objectives in all types of capital projects and development from conception to commissioning and maintenance, in all sectors of the economy for the attainment of sustainable national financial pressures of cost limit, quality and value optimization.
The Architect is the designer of the building project and is employed by the owner to look after his interest as regards designing, obtaining tenders for and superintending the construction of the structure for which he has been commissioned. He brings the team together to give guidance on specific points such as the structural engineer, the quantity surveyor, services engineer’s etc. The engineers design within the scope of their specialist fields, produce calculations or other relevant data that may be required. They are also very much needed during the actual construction to perform supervisory roles.
